ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS

APPLICATION GUIDELINES 

The Warren County Arts Council makes scholarships available each year to

provide tuition assistance to students pursuing a degree in the arts at the college level.

The deadline for Scholarship Applications is April 13, 2012.

There are seven types of scholarships available:

 

1. Warren County Arts Scholarships ($500 - $1000, at least two awarded)

a. For the purpose of this scholarship program, arts are defined to encompass vocal and instrumental music education, performance, music theory, composition, art, art history, arts education, creative writing, drama, theatre, media arts, film studies, dance and photography.

b. Applicants must be high school seniors attending a Warren County High School and residing in Warren County.  More than one student per household may be eligible, but separate applications should be completed.  Colleges must be accredited educational institutions located in the United States. Children of Arts Council Board Members are not eligible to apply.

c. All scholarship applicants will be considered for these scholarships.

 

2. Moeller Music Center Music School Education Scholarship ($500)

a. The Moeller Music Education Scholarship was established by Larry D. Fullenkamp in an effort to encourage individuals to pursue education and careers in instrumental music school education.

b.  Named for a local retail music business in southwest Ohio, the scholarship is available to high school seniors from the Ohio Music Education Association’s (OMEA) District 13 including Warren County students, and who intend to major in instrumental music school education.  An appropriate applicant is a student with a desire to pursue an instrumental music teaching career in a school system after graduation from college.

c.  Applicants who meet these criteria and wish to be considered for this scholarship must submit additional materials (see “Supplementary Materials” section of application).

 

3.  Hamilton Stands Music Scholarship ($500)

a.  The Hamilton Stands Music Scholarship was established to encourage college or university students to pursue instrumental music performance or music business management studies.

b.  Hamilton Stands is the oldest sheet music and instrument stand company in the world.  Founded in 1883 in Hamilton, Ohio, it is a leader in quality and innovation, having invented many products that are now ubiquitous, including the folding sheet music and neck suspending guitar stands. 

c.  An appropriate applicant is a student who meets the WCAC Scholarship guidelines and intends to pursue an instrumental music performance degree or one in music business management.

d.  Applicants who meet these criteria and wish to be considered for this scholarship must submit additional materials (see “Supplementary Materials” section of application).

 

4.  Hawkins Music Scholarship ($500)

The Gene and Margaret Hawkins Scholarship is available to a Warren County high school senior who meets other WCAC Scholarship guidelines and plans to major in classical music training.  Preference will be given to applicants pursing a career in classical vocal performance, teaching or conducting.  Anyone pursuing a career as a classical instrumentalist will be considered.

 

5.  Larry E. Stone Arts Scholarship ($500)

The Larry Stone Arts Scholarship is established in 2011 to honor Larry’s vision and dedication as the founder of the Warren County Arts Council.  In accordance with Larry’s broad and inclusive view of the “Arts”, this scholarship has no additional restrictions and follows the same guidelines as the Warren County Arts Scholarships.

 

6.  Cynthia Maria Stegman Voice Scholarship ($500)

The Cynthia Maria Stegman Scholarship is available to a Warren County high school senior who meets other WCAC Scholarship guidelines and plans to major in voice, or a Warren County resident already enrolled in voice at the college level.  This scholarship is named after a Warren County citizen who loved to sing in choir and symphony and shared her gift with the community throughout her life.  Her mother, Liz Stegman, celebrates Cynthia’s love for music and singing by sponsoring this scholarship.   Preference will be given to students in financial need.  Voice major applicants with emphasis in teaching or performance are desirable.

 

7.  LCNB Arts Scholarship ($500)

The LCNB Arts Scholarship was established in 2011 under the generous sponsorship of Lebanon Citizen’s National Bank.  This scholarship follows the same guidelines as the Warren County Arts Scholarship.

 

Awards: The awards are based on relevant experience, achievement in chosen field, academic potential, commitment to the field, and overall impression as they relate to scholarship criteria. The Arts Council Board will review applications from students and reserves the right to distribute no funding if there are insufficient applicants or the applicants do not meet standards of acceptability as judged by the appointed review committee.  Additional materials and/or a personal interview may be requested from scholarship finalists.  Scholarship checks are paid directly to the recipient.  Students receiving scholarships will be required to provide the Arts Council official enrollment verification sent directly from the college or university before the check is issued. 

 

Restrictions: The Arts Council reserves the right to withdraw an award if 1) The student does not enroll in an arts-related degree program at an accredited higher education institution within 6 months of the award, or 2) if any of the application information is determined to be false.

 

Application Procedure:  The attached form must be fully completed and accompanied by the required statement from the student and letters of support.  Forms can be downloaded from our website www.warrencountyarts.org, however, submissions must be received as a hard copy. Applications and all supplementary information should be mailed to the Warren County Arts Council (1917 Heritage Run Drive, Lebanon, Ohio 45036) and must be received by Friday, April 13, 2012.  No applications submitted by electronic mail will be accepted.

Doris Conner Visual Arts Scholarship

The Doris Conner Visual Arts scholarship is available to Warren County high school seniors who meet other WCAC Scholarship guidelines and plan to major in visual arts.  This scholarship is named after a Waynesville artist who spent her adult life painting and giving her paintings generously to friends, family, and institutions.  Her son, Stephen Conner, recognizes her passion for the visual arts by sponsoring this scholarship.

Tyler Fewell

Mason High School

 A very deserving Mason High School senior, Tyler Fewell, was chosen for this award.  He is a well-rounded, excellent student with a desire to develop his artistic abilities in college and to grow as an artist throughout his life.  He has prepared himself through years of study in drawing, painting, and digital design, and had real life experience as a caricaturist at Kings Island. Those efforts have resulted in many impressive awards, including the 2011 Ohio Governor’s Art Exhibition Top 25 (two of his pieces were selected) & a silver medal for his art portfolio in this year’s National Scholastic Art competition.  He has also participated in many extra curricular activities, including: sports leagues & youth groups.  He is a fine artist and person by all measures.  Upon graduation he wants to collaborate with the artist community and to provide artwork to the public.  We feel confident that his abilities, drive, and passion will lead to success.   He has chosen to study art with an emphasis on illustration at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Moeller Music Center Music School Education Scholarship

The Moeller Music Education Scholarship was established by Larry D. Fullenkamp in an effort to encourage individuals to pursue education and careers in instrumental music school education.  The scholarship is named for a local retail music business in southwest Ohio, and the scholarship is available to high school seniors from the Ohio Music Education Association’s (OMEA) District 13 and who intend to major in instrumental music school education. 

Marie Knueven

Lakota East High School

Marie Knueven is a very dedicated, intelligent, & talented Lakota East High School senior with strong leadership ability, and was chosen for this award.  She plays bass and tuba, and has been involved in jazz band, marching band, concert band, and wind ensemble; & has experience and numerous honors to confirm her musical ability, from high school to regional recognition. At high school she was also a two-year field commander, and first chair of the Symphonic Winds throughout all of her high school years.  She has been in OMEA District 13’s honor band, honor jazz ensemble, honor orchestra, and wind symphony.  She has been 2-year All-State Jazz Ensemble bassist; a 3-year member of UC College-Conservatory of Music Preparatory Department Brass Choir on tuba, and a Wright State Tri-State Honor Band tuba player. She has participated in the Blue Star Drum & Bugle Corps.  She is at the top of her class academically and has a strong work ethic and focus.  Her Jazz Studies director expressed how genuinely she cares about the success and experience of those around her and that she holds herself and others to a high level of expectation, while maintaining the respect of her peers.  She will major in Music Education & Jazz Studies.  After graduation her career goal is to teach music to beginners, middle school, high school or college.  We feel she will represent well the spirit of the Moeller Music Scholarship in the years ahead.

Larry E. Stone Arts Scholarship

The Larry Stone Arts Scholarship was established in 2011 to honor Larry’s vision and dedication as the founder of the Warren County Arts Council.  In accordance with Larry’s broad and inclusive view of the “Arts”, this scholarship has no additional restrictions and follows the same guidelines as the Warren County Arts Scholarships.

Megan Archer

Lebanon High School

Megan Archer of Lebanon High School is the recipient of this award.  She is described by her AP teacher as one of the top creative thinkers in a competitive class, and she is an outstanding creative writer.  She is also described as a person with the ability to lead.  She leads through encouraging discipline, building teamwork, and promoting musical excellence, by being the first to arrive and the last to leave. She has received leadership awards in high school, and has been recognize as the best conductor overall at the Drum Major Academy.  Megan’s band director describes her as a phenomenal musician and student.  Her technical ability and raw talent on saxophone are only matched by her ability to interpret music at a level well above her years.  She also plays marimba, vibes, and piano. She has participated in marching band, indoor percussion, jazz band, wind ensemble, solo and ensemble, and honor band. She has been a piano accompanist and drum major.  Her passion for music exceeds any other feelings.  She wants to teach and inspire students to get involved in the activities that they love. She will major in Music Education at Capital University

Hawkins Music Scholarship

The Gene and Margaret Hawkins Scholarship is available to a Warren County high school senior who meets other WCAC Scholarship guidelines and plans to major in classical music training.  Preference is given to applicants pursuing a career in classical vocal performance, teaching or conducting. 

Rachel Smith

Springboro High School

The person chosen for the Gene and Margaret Hawkins Scholarship is Rachel Smith, a Springboro High School senior.   She has traveled extensively performing symphonic music, and was selected for the Ohio Ambassadors of Music.  This is a group of Ohio musicians that perform in European cities.  Rachel has been very active in her school and community, participating in many activities and clubs while keeping her grades high.  She has held leadership roles in her junior year as class secretary and senior year as president.   She has been active in every aspect of the music program, participating in Wind Ensemble, marching band, pep band, winter percussion, and school musicals.  She has been principle chair oboe player for the Wind Ensemble and the percussion section for the high school marching band since she has been involved.    Freshman year she was first chair in OMEA District XIII Honors Band, & a member of honors band ever since.  She has performed with the Wright State Tri-State Honor Band for three years.  For over four years, she has enriched her study of oboe working with instructors at Wright State University and Miami University. During her life she has played violin, piano, flute, baritone, English Horn, percussion and oboe.  We loved that with all her musical accomplishments – she auditioned and made the drum line of marching band her junior and senior seasons.   She’s an excellent student with a commitment to community service; we think her nature is in the spirit of this scholarship.  She wants to teach and stay active in performance ensembles during her university years. Her dream is to work with others educating students in the pursuit of excellent music.  She will major in Music Education at Miami University.

Warren County Arts Scholarship

For the purpose of this scholarship program, arts are defined to encompass vocal and instrumental music education, performance, music theory, composition, art, art history, arts education, creative writing, drama, theatre, media arts, film studies, dance and photography

Madeleine Bransford

Mason High School

The person chosen for this WCAC scholarship is Madeleine Bransford from Mason.    She has studied painting, stained glass, fiber art, drawing, photography, and jewelry.  She has designed and sold commissioned pieces of jewelry, and has received recognition in a Garden Center photo contest, and received the Teacher’s Awards in Fiber Arts and Most Creative and Most Fashionable.  She received two Excellences in Visual Arts Silver Keys for Jewlery & one Excellence Silver for Sculpture, plus one Excellence of Merit for Jewelry in the 2011 Scholastic Art & Writing Awards competition.  In March 2010, she received recognition on the SuddenlyDarling fashion website for her submitted fashion photo.  Her teachers credit her open minded approach, flexibility in decision making, and attention to detail as her greatest assets.   Her teacher has shared with us that Madeleine can’t get enough art classes, and that she has innate artistic talents and commitment to the arts.    She has been accepted into DAAP at the University of Cincinnati and will focus on Fashion Design.  Her hopes are that she will be able to utilize her creative side through expression in fashion.

LCNB Arts Scholarship

The LCNB Arts Scholarship was made available in 2011 under the generous sponsorship of Lebanon Citizen’s National Bank.  This scholarship follows the same guidelines as the Warren County Arts Scholarships and has no additional restrictions.

Lauren Goodwin

Kings High School

A very deserving Kings High School senior, Lauren Goodwin, was chosen for this award.  She is a well-rounded, excellent student with a desire to pursue her interest in the arts upon college graduation.  She is a four-year, varsity-letter winner in cross country and track, and placed third at the Division I State Championships in March of this year.  Her coach described her as a natural leader with her ability to draw in younger students who elicit her advice and support.  She is known to pay great deal of attention to detail & has an eye for preciseness and accuracy.  She has displayed persistence pertaining to creative ideas, craft, enthusiasm & focus.  She has studied digital media, photography, drawing, painting, and sculpture, & her sculpture work was recognized as best sculpture.   She has chosen to study graphic design in Design, Art, Architecture and Planning Program (DAAP) at the University of Cincinnati.  After graduation she wants to work for a company doing graphic design for the advertising department.  We feel confident that her abilities and drive will lead to success.

Moeller Music Center’s Music School Education Scholarship

Hannah Dornon, Middletown High School

 

Hannah will major in Music Education at Asbury University.

Hannah’s career goal is to become a music teacher on the high school or college level to work with young musicians and encourage them to expand their musical abilities, and to raise a generation of kids who love music and enjoy it their whole lives.

 

Comments:

Her positive attitude, unrivaled commitment and standard of excellence have been a major source of inspiration for many students and faculty alike.

I have no doubt Hannah will succeed in her chosen profession… she has already demonstrated the determination and maturity necessary to achieve her goals

   

Hawkins Music Scholarship

Abby Liebowitz, Kings High School

 

Abby will major in Musical Theatre at Northern Kentucky University.

 

Abby’s goal is to make a living in the theatre world and has the dream of being on Broadway.  For Abby, all the world is her stage, and she intends to perform on every inch of it.

 

Comments:

Abby’s work ethic is unparalleled both in and out of the classroom… she is a highly talented actress and a genuine young woman.  Abby strives for excellence and seeks it for those around her as well. I know that she will work hard to ensure success in whatever she pursues.

   

Doris J. Conner Scholarship

Amanda Smith, Lebanon High School

 

Amanda will major in Graphic Design at the University of Cincinnati.

 

Amanda’s ultimate goal is to become an art director, a career that she knows involves copious amounts of effort, hard work and exceptional leadership, to use her leadership abilities to give back to the artistic community.

 

Comments:

Amanda has grown into a strong and confident young woman with a true love of life that she shares with people around her.  I am convinced that Amanda has the character, personality, ability and aspired interests as a student, artist and person to be successful.  Respect, responsibility and citizenship are all part of who she is.

   

Warren County Arts Council Scholarship

Melanie Stegemiller, Lebanon High School

 

Melanie will study Music Education at Bowling Green State University.

 

Melanie’s goal is to be a music teacher at the elementary level to help introduce students to music; to teach them how to play music so as they can also learn the passion and feelings that music brings to them.

 

Comments:

Melanie’s success occurs because she goes above and beyond the expectations of the group by working harder, faster and smarter than most anyone else.  She belongs in the music profession.  Melanie is the type of student every college wants; she is a person who will help guide our future.
